The main purpose of the Backlog Refinement event is to prepare requirements for Iteration Planning. During this event, the Scrum Team reviews the items in the backlog to ensure that they are well-defined, understood, and ready for the upcoming iteration. This preparation involves breaking down larger items into smaller, more manageable stories, clarifying acceptance criteria, and estimating the work involved, which allows the team to approach iteration planning with more clarity and confidence.

Effective backlog refinement leads to a more organized and prioritized list of work items that can be efficiently planned during the Iteration Planning session. This ensures that the team can commit to a realistic and achievable set of goals based on the refined backlog. Other activities related to team alignment on progress or process improvements do occur in Scrum but are part of different events, such as Daily Stand-ups or Retrospectives, rather than being the focus of the Backlog Refinement.
